A Clinical Review of 136 Cases of Inguinal Hernia


Abstract
This study is a clinical analysis of 136 cases of inguinal hernia patients treated at the Department of surgery, St. Columban's Hospital during last 2 years and 8 months from Jan. 1990 to Aug. 1992 were clinically analyzed and the result were as
flollows
1) The ration of male to female was 5.2 : 1
2) The location of inguinal hernia : 88 cases(64.7%) in the right, 44 cases(32.4%) in the lft. 4 cases92.9%) bilaterally.
3) Indirect inguinal hernia is the most frequent form of the inguinal hernia consisting of 95.6% and next direct 4.4%.
4) The chief complaints were inguinal mass in 123 cases(90.4%), scrotal swelling in 11 cases (8.0%), irritability 1 cases(0.7%), abdominal pain and distension 1 cases(0.7%).
5) The contents of hernia sac was omentum 5 cases(3.6%) and small intestine 3 cases(2.2%).
6) The incidence of incarceration was 8 cases(5.9%), hydrocele 22 cases(16.2%), cryptochidism 1 cases(0.7%) spermatic cordcele 1 cases(0.7%) and combined incarceration and cryptochidism was 1 cases (0.7%) of all cases.
7) 81 cases(59.6%) of all hernia were repaired by High Ligation, 51 cases(37.5%0 by Bassini method, 3 cases(2.2%) by Shouldice and Bassini op. After High Ligation was 1 cases(0.7%).
8) The type of operation was elective 128 cases(94.1%) and emergency 8 cases(5.9%). The emergency case was incarcerated inguinal hernia.
9) The postoperative complication were 16 cases(11.7%): pneumonia 12 cases98.8%), wound infection 2 cases(1.4%), Hematoma 1 cases(0.7%), recurrence 1 cases(0.7%).
10) Case of other site inguinal hernia development was 5 cases(3.7%).
